It has been a long time since I wrote about a Firefox extension, so here we go again. This week I was downloading many Linux distributions to test them out, but I was having problems with the downloads because my Internet connection was very unstable.

In order to solve the problem I started researching for a download manager. I was thinking about a desktop application initially, but then I came across DownThemAll!, a Firefox extension that does pretty much all you need for downloads.

The feature that I was looking for was the “pause/resume download” one, but after exploring the extension I realized that it can do much more than that. For example, you can use it to download links, images and objects from web pages, create special filters to download only some files and rename them on the fly. Highly recommended.

Ramped Reviews Case Study

Ramped Reviews is an ebook written by Robb Sutton on how to start a review site or blog, get free stuff to review and make a lot of money at it. I wrote the review back on July 10 and sold quite a few copies. However, like most blogs, once the post goes off the front page, sales goes to pretty much nothing because no one checks the archives.

Shortly after writing the review on Ramped Reviews, Google let me back into their index. This resulted in me ranking for the phase “how to start a review blog” and other related keywords.

Mind you, there wasn’t enough search volume from this set of keywords to bring any significant traffic. A check of the Google AdWords keyword tools shows it doesn’t have enough data to tell me how many times each month that phase is searched. However, my Google Analytics showed that between July 16 to today (July 31), Google sent 35 visitors who were searching for information on how to start a review blog to the Ramped Review post. This was the result.

Four visitors went on to purchased a copy of Ramped Review, with the latest sale coming in at 12:52am on July 31. Now, $80 of eBook sales isn’t anything to write home about but look at it this way. The review is up and indexed by Google, which is sending it enough traffic to generate four sales in two weeks. If this trend holds, it will make $160 a month in Ramped Review sales. That’s $1,920 a year from one blog post!

As I’ve stated, “how to start a review blog” isn’t a highly searched phases (it’s very targeted however). To make good money, you need to target keywords and phases with more volume and send them to an matching affiliate offer. Something like this.

What I’ve been doing is basically what The Number 1 Way To Make Money Online has been teaching – build a niche content site, have Google send it traffic and make money with targeted affiliate offers. As you can see from the screen shot below, It’s a fantastic business model.

Today I spent a little time digging around in my AdSense earnings stats to see how they’d been performing over the last 6-12 months and particularly was interested in how the RSS advertising was performing.

I decided to pull out some of the data that I found and chart it (I’m a visual kind of guy) and thought I’d share some of what I saw when I analyzed how the ads are performing in the feed of my photography site since August 2008 when I started running AdSense in the feed.

I’ve removed the figures from the chart to comply with the Terms of Service that AdSense has that prohibit sharing of too many specifics but have below charted Earnings (the blue line), eCPM (earnings per 1000 impressions - the Red line) and Impression numbers (the yellow line). I’ve also included a linear trend line to help visualize the average movement.

When I initially looked at the raw data I was surprised to see how much the ads were now earning on a daily basis. It’s been a long while since I looked at the figures so they actually looked quite healthy (RSS ads now make up around 10% of my overall AdSense earnings). My first reaction was that perhaps AdSense have got RSS advertising right at last and it’s starting to earn more per impression.

However the chart above tells a different story with the increase in earnings coming from an increase in impressions. In fact eCPM has been falling.

My next question was whether this fall in eCPM was due to the economy or whether it was more to do with a trend in RSS advertising - so I decided to compare the eCPM of my RSS ads vs the eCPM of the AdSense ads on my site. Here’s what I found:

This surprised me. While RSS eCPM (blue) is on the downward slope onsite eCPM has been on the up and up.

Of course this could be explained by the increase in the popularity of the site and more advertisers targeting it (I’ve noticed that as traffic and the brand of DPS grows that more and more advertisers are targeting the site) - but from what I can see advertisers are targeting the feed as well as the site, yet the eCPM is falling there.

Keep in mind that this is just an observation of a single site - I’m sure it’ll differ from site to site and industry to industry (for example the RSS ads here on ProBlogger’s feeds are performing appallingly less than a tenth of what they earn on DPS despite having half as many subscribers) but it does make me wonder whether others are seeing similar trends?

One of the greatest implied conflicts in the "make money online" community is the debate whether we should focus on creating small "niche" websites or larger "flagship" websites. As someone who has found success in both niches, I've found the debate to be completely wrong-founded.

This article will introduce you to the two most popular website business models, and will compare them for you to choose.

Small Niche Websites

A small niche website is a website that has just a few dozen articles and is written to rank well for a very specific niche. For example, I built a website that details the basics of information dealing with short term loans.

The website details the basics of student, personal and business short term loans. It isn't amazing. The content isn't breathtaking. But I still make $20 per day.

That website is geared towards the search engines specifically. I focus on content and links -- and that's it. By focusing on writing a good 20-30 articles, you have enough content to rank in Google. By building links, you'll be increasing your ability to rank in Google as well as the other search engines.

The total amount of time to build a website is less than 2 days if you're a fast writer. The time to build links depends, but I usually spend about a month working on a new niche site.

The income is usually limited. I usually make no more than $5-10 per day per website, with the exception of the short-term loan site. But when you build 20 or so small niche websites, you have a relatively easy income stream.

Here are the reasons people like to try small niche websites:

-You don't have to constantly update
-You don't have to constantly manage comments
-You don't have to build links for years
-You can expand as you see fit

Large Flagship Websites

Large websites are different from the small niche websites. They aren't written only for the search engines, but are wired specifically for people. The goal is to get a large following of people to read the website. These readers will give you a huge level of traffic every day.

An example would be my How to Make Money Online website. My biggest money-making page is the affiliate page, where I help others make a few hundred per day who aren't looking to actually create a website.

You make money specifically by selling products, placing ads on the website, etc. You don't make much per visitor, but the theory is that with enough traffic, you can still pull a profit.

The idea is that you generate traffic by writing and publishing fantastic content every single day. Some blogs publish literally 5-10 articles per day, trying to shock and awe the Internet into gathering them a great income and following.

-It takes a lot more work
-It takes more time to succeed
-The competition is usually worse
-But the payoff can be lucrative

This is where most people earn millions online -- by publishing a flagship website in a competitive and high-paying niche.

Conclusion

There you have it. If you are willing to work harder to get the money, a flagship website might be for you. Of course, if you're just starting out a niche website is probably the best bet. I have used both and both methods work just as well in the long run -- it's really just up to you.

2 – Lack of Passion

One reason why your online venture fails is that you are doing it just to make money, but the matter of the fact is that money is a peripheral which comes along with your success. Whatever you choose to do, do it passionately believe me money will come along automatically. Do doubt money is a great motivating factor but it should not be one of your prime motives. If you are doing something for which you have great passion and admiration I am sure you will unquestionably succeed in your endeavor.

3 – Fickle Nature

Lack of determination results in fickle nature, it means unduly changeable in feeling, judgment or purpose. If you are not confident enough you keep on changing your decisions, changing your mind frequently without putting enough efforts into your plans always result in failure. There are examples when people succeed after 20 to 50 failed attempts. If things are not turning up as per your wish it does not always calls for a change in policy, it depend on how confident you are about your business strategy, approach and success. For example if you ask any successful super affiliate who is making insane money now, he will tell you how much money he had lost during his initial campaigns. People fails while learning the tricks of the game, the only thing which force them to keep on trying is their confidence and faith in the business and in themselves.

4 – Lack of Knowledge

You must acquired proficient knowledge in your niche before jumping into it, if you are not a competent authority in your subject then do not try to pretend, you will get caught. When you are a make money online blogger and recommend your reader to try some products or join some blogging coaching programs or endorse any other stuff it must shows from your words that you have complete knowledge and command over your statements and on the product you are advocating. Your reader shows belief in you by subscribing your blog, buying products through your affiliate links and joining your recommended training programs, they will do this only when they are confident about your authority on the subject. Half knowledge or little knowledge is always dangerous for you and for your online business.

5 – You Are Not a Fighter

A fighter is one who never gives up, no matter how worse the situation is. I bet 90% of you would have closed down your online businesses if big daddy google stop supporting your venture like in the case of John Chow. The biggest thing that you can learn from John Chow is that nobody can knock you down if you have faith in yourself, no matter how big he is and no matter how small you are. John struggled for almost three years without google this is because he never lost his faith during the trial of his abilities. Online business is not a piece of cake, it just like when you see a beautiful building you must realize the huge amount of hard work that has been gone into structuring its sturdy foundation. Are you the one who afraid from failure? The one who always hide from assessment or the one who faces the challenge and win over the weaknesses?

I know you are a fighter, you will win, no doubt about it, but if you have any of the above lacking in your behavior I wish and hope that you will work out and come out as a rock solid winner.

You probably have already seen dozens, if not hundreds of “make money online” blogs and websites out there, right?
